Robert's Story
Life
I'm happily married, have a daughter and grandson, and two cats. We live in a 3-bedroom house on 1-1/4 acres, and my wife's mom lives next door on her 1-1/4 acre. We have the standard two vehicles and an extra old pick-up my wife lovingly calls my lawn ornament. (It's really in the driveway but it's close.)
We hit the powwow trail when we can but it's hard until my wife retires in a couple of years. I used to do the Arena Directing at our local powwows until I got injured (see workplace), so now we just go and watch, visit and check out the vendors. My wife dances and sits on a drum when she can.
My dad died last year so I went back home to Rosebud to take his ashes. We had a memorial service here in April shortly after he died in April, and then another at Parmalee in August 2006. He was 93. We were fortunate he was in good health until the last two months of his life. My three sisters, who are all within 45 minutes of where we live, and I miss him very much.
Workplace
A...Expand for more
fter retiring from the Corps I had a few odd jobs and then settled in to working at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a Shipwright. Basically, that means I built and dismantled scaffolding and built dock settings for submarines and surface vessels for the Navy. I really enjoyed what I was doing but the results of an injury in 2005 caused me to eventually retire in 2006.
Now my job is to run the house: the vacuum, the washer, you get the idea, while my wife works and tries to keep me in the style to which I became accustomed!
Military
After graduation I joined the Marine Corps and spent the next 20 years until I retired as a SSGT. I did two tours in Viet Nam... the first in '67 and the second in '70. I received a Purple Heart from the battle at Khe Sanh during the Tet Offensive in '68. I'm on the Frequent Flyer program to the Veteran's Administration for PTSD. I just returned from a visit to Viet Nam in June 2007 where I visited all of my old battlefields. Things have really changed in 39 years!
